Mr. Mitchell Bahr has taught as a band director for 22 years. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Biola University in La Mirada, California and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. Currently in his 17th year at Foothill High School, Mr. Bahr directs all instrumental ensembles at Foothill: String Orchestra, Concert Band (Band I), Symphonic Band (Band II), the Jazz Cats (Jazz B) and The Club Cougar Orchestra (Jazz A). In addition, Mr. Bahr oversees the Drumline, Jazz Combos and many additional ensembles.
Previously, Mr. Bahr taught at Rancho-Starbuck Intermediate School in Whittier, California.
Our very own Mr. Bahr is a California State Teacher of the Year. This is an honor awarded to five public school teachers every year; regardless of grade level, subject area, race, creed, color, etc... Recently, Mr. Bahr was selected as the 2016 Shasta County Teacher of the Year. After applying for consideration through an extended application, he began the lengthy interview and observation process. After several months of evaluation, observation, application review, and interviews, Mr. Bahr was chosen by the California Department of Education and State Superintendent Tom Torlakson as a 2016 California State Teacher of the Year!
In addition, Mr. Bahr is active in CMEA (California Music Educator's Association); speaking in Sacramento at Stand Up for Music Day and serving as festival host for the Redding Solo and Ensemble Festival. He has been featured in The Instrumentalist Magazine, Bandworld Magazine, the Biola Magazine, the Biola Bravo (Music Department) Magazine, the CTA (California Teacher Association) Magazine and several additional CMEA newletters and publications. He was also recognized as a PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) Outstanding Educator in 2014.
In his spare time, Mr. Bahr enjoys spending time with his family. He is married to Carmen (1995) and they have two children, Isabelle (16) and Isaac (14). Besides family life and many musical endeavors, Mr. Bahr enjoys basketball, card games, and watching Seinfeld, Psych or the SF Giants.
